Mulch in Summer

Stay cool and keep your garden thriving this summer in Brisbane

Summer in Brisbane brings high temperatures, strong sun and lots of evaporation from the soil. I’ve learnt that the right mulch makes a huge difference - and lucky for you, we stock a great range of options that work for our local beds and climate.

Why the right mulch matters during Brisbane summers

  • A good mulch layer acts like a blanket over your soil: it slows the rate at which water evaporates, meaning you don’t have to water quite as often.
  • It also moderates the soil temperature; in the hot sun our root systems can really feel the stress, so anything that keeps them cooler helps.
  • And of course it suppresses weeds (which compete for moisture) and improves appearance.

Our favourite mulch picks for summer

Here are a few of the products I’d personally choose - depending on your bed type, sun exposure and budget.

  • Sugar-cane mulch – This is great for vegetable beds or newly planted areas. It’s described by the store as “100% organic, clean, and nutrient-rich”
  • Pine bark mulch – A more coarse option, good for garden beds with shrubs & trees.
  • Tea-tree mulch - For a different texture and look, this variety performs well in a hot climate.
  • Forest Mulch – Cost effective, available in bulk

How I’d apply it — the practical bits

  • First, water the bed thoroughly before applying mulch.
  • Then spread a layer of about 50–75 mm (about 5–7.5 cm) of mulch over the surface. That depth is enough to make a difference in moisture retention and temperature moderation.
  • I’d keep the mulch pulled away from the bases/trunks of plants so as not to encourage rot or pests.
  • If your garden bed is in full afternoon sun (typical Brisbane summer), I’d lean more towards the coarse bark or the sugar-cane options rather than very fine mulch or dark dyed mulches (which can hold heat).
