Backyard Sandpit for Kids

Ah, the backyard sandpit - the unsung hero of parenting. It's the place where your toddler can excavate a mountain of sand, and you can finally sit down with a cuppa without hearing, "I'm bored!" So, how do you craft this sandy oasis? Let's dive in.

Step 1: Choose the Right Spot

Avoid building near fruit trees or trees that shed leaves frequently, as you'll end up cleaning rotten fruit and leaves out of the sandpit. Also, try pick the area in your yard that is the most level, and keep in mind the amount of sun the area gets throughout the day. Lather your kids in sunscreen and slap on a hat to keep them protected from the warm Queensland sun!

Once you have selected the area, use a shovel to remove turf and dig a narrow 70mm deep trench around the perimeter of the area.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

You'll need:

  • Treated pine sleepers or timber
  • Screws and a drill
  • Shade cloth or weed mat
  • Fine washed sand

Step 3: Build the Frame

Construct a rectangular or square frame using the timber. Secure the corners with screws.

We stock different sizes of treated pine sleepers as well as sealed premium concrete sleepers. If you can let us know the approximate size you want your sandpit, our team can help you choose the correct products and organise delivery of all materials.

Step 4: Prepare the Base

Lay down shade cloth or a weed mat to prevent weeds from sprouting.

Step 5: Add the Sand

Fill the frame with fine washed sand. Ensure it's deep enough for digging and building.

We sell the perfect sand for sandpits. Whether you want to pick it up yourself or have it delivered, we recommend our “Gold Coast Sand” which is in bulk in our yard and we can have it delivered straight to your house. Or, we stock Rocky Point “Super Clean Sand” in 20kg bags for under $10 each.

Step 6: Maintain the Magic

Keep the sand clean by covering the pit when not in use. Regularly rake the sand to maintain its texture. And remember, a clean sandpit is a happy sandpit.

Bonus Tips

  • Add toys like shovels, buckets, and trucks to enhance playtime.
  • Incorporate a chalkboard lid for creative drawings.
  • Consider a shaded area to protect little ones from the sun.

Building a sandpit is a rewarding project that provides endless fun for your kids. So, grab your tools, get building, and let the sandy adventures begin!
